Extra Virgin Olive Oil & A Healthy Lifestyle
It’s no secret that an unhealthy diet and lifestyle can lead to a whole host of health problems. Many of these issues are exacerbated by the consumption of saturated fats – which are all too abundant in our modern diets. But there is a solution in the form of extra virgin olive oil – widely considered to be the best olive oil for health benefits. Not only is it packed with all the polyphenols and antioxidants you need to keep your body fighting fit, but it can also be a vital part of a healthier lifestyle. Adopting the principles of the Mediterranean diet – with olive oil as its primary source of fat – is a great place to start.
But it’s important to remember that the truest followers of this type of eating plan are often those who incorporate other healthy habits too. So if optimal health is your aim, extra virgin olive oil should be right at the top of your shopping list.
Is Extra Virgin Olive Oil A Food Or A Medicine?
Extra virgin olive oil has been praised as one of the best oils for a healthy lifestyle, but is it just a foodstuff or can it also be considered a medicine? The truth is that extra virgin olive oil is both. This highest quality olive oil is full of polyphenols that are known to have anti-inflammatory properties and can help reduce the risk of chronic diseases. The benefits that come with consuming extra virgin olive oil daily are endless, from improving heart health to promoting brain function. Incorporating this amazing oil into your diet can not only enhance your meal’s flavor but also provide countless health benefits, making it a wonderful foodstuff and medicine.
How Can Extra Virgin Olive Oil Help Prevent Heart Disease?
If you are looking to reduce levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol in your arteries and arm yourself against heart disease, including a quality olive oil in your diet is a great place to start. By substituting saturated fats for healthier unsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats (both present in extra virgin olive oil) you are contributing to a reduced risk of the health complications caused by high levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol.
There are a wide range of diseases that we now know are at least in part related to healthy diet and lifestyle choices. They include:
Coronary heart disease
In the United States, heart disease is the leading cause of death for men, women, and people of most racial and ethnic groups. About 655,000 Americans die from heart disease each year, that’s 1 in every 4 deaths. Heart disease costs the United States about $219 billion each year from 2014 to 2015.
Coronary Artery Disease
About 18.2 million adults age 20 and older have CAD (about 6.7%). About 2 in 10 deaths from CAD happen in adults less than 65 years old.
Heart Attack
In the United States, someone has a heart attack every 40 seconds. Every year, about 805,000 Americans have a heart attack.

Cerebrovascular disease – CVD (stroke)
Each year CVD causes an estimated 17 million deaths worldwide, accounting for one-third of all worldwide deaths. More than one-third of these deaths occur in middle-aged adults.
The scale of the health problems are truly vast and the cost of treating these diseases astronomical. The impact on lifespan expectancy is also measurable.
Why Morocco Gold Is The Best Extra Virgin Olive Oil
It is not often that you come across a ‘wisdom of the ancients’ that is as relevant now as it has been for thousands of years.
What makes extra virgin olive oil so special is that it has stood the test of time as a superfood from the time of the ancients. Olive oil has long been considered sacred. The olive branch was often a symbol of abundance, glory, and peace. Over the years, the olive has also been used to symbolize wisdom, fertility, power, and purity.

Does Extra Virgin Olive Oil make A Difference?
Researchers from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health conducted a massive study of the impact of health habits on life expectancy, using data from the well-known Nurses’ Health Study (NHS) and the Health Professionals Follow-up Study (HPFS). This means that they had data on a huge number of people over a very long period of time. The NHS included over 78,000 women and followed them from 1980 to 2014. The HPFS included over 40,000 men and followed them from 1986 to 2014. This is over 120,000 participants, 34 years of data for women, and 28 years of data for men.
The researchers looked at NHS and HPFS data on diet, physical activity, body weight, smoking, and alcohol consumption that had been collected from regularly administered, validated questionnaires. These five areas were chosen because prior studies have shown them to have a large impact on risk of premature death. Here is how these healthy habits were defined and measured:
Healthy diet
This was calculated and rated based on the reported intake of healthy foods like vegetables, fruits, nuts, whole grains, healthy fats like extra virgin olive oil, and omega-3 fatty acids, and unhealthy foods like red and processed meats, sugar-sweetened beverages, trans fat, and sodium. A healthy diet makes for a healthy life.
Healthy physical activity level
This was defined as at least 30 minutes per day of moderate to vigorous activity daily.
Healthy body weight
Defined as a normal body mass index (BMI), which is between 18.5 and 24.9.
Smoking
There is no healthy amount of smoking. “Healthy” here meant never having smoked.
Measured as between 5 and 15 grams per day for women, and 5 to 30 grams per day for men. Generally, one drink contains about 14 grams of pure alcohol. That’s 12 ounces of regular beer, 5 ounces of wine, or 1.5 ounces of distilled spirits.
Researchers also looked at data on age, ethnicity, and medication use, as well as comparison data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys and the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention’s Wide-Ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research.
Does a healthy lifestyle make a difference?
As it turns out, healthy life habits make a big difference on our life. According to this analysis, people who met criteria for all five habits enjoyed significantly, impressively longer lives than those who had none: 14 years for women and 12 years for men (if they had these habits at age 50). People who had none of these habits were far more likely to die prematurely from cancer or cardiovascular disease.
Study investigators also calculated life expectancy by how many of these five healthy habits people had. Just one healthy habit (and it didn’t matter which one) … just one… extended life expectancy by two years in men and women. Not surprisingly, the more healthy habits people had, the longer their lifespan.
This is huge. And, it confirms prior similar research — a lot of prior similar research. A 2017 study using data from the Health and Retirement Study found that people 50 and older who were normal weight, had never smoked, and drank alcohol in moderation lived on average seven years longer. A 2012 mega-analysis of 15 international studies that included over 500,000 participants found that over half of premature deaths were due to unhealthy lifestyle factors such as poor diet, inactivity, obesity, excessive alcohol intake, and smoking. And the list of supporting research goes on.

The Health Benefits Of Extra Virgin Olive Oil : A Further Study
Although the control diet was rich in fruits and vegetables like the two Mediterranean diets, the diet was shown to have an adverse impact on HDL’s (good) anti-inflammatory properties. This negative impact was not observed in the Mediterranean diets. A reduction in HDL’s (good) anti-inflammatory capacity is linked with a greater risk of heart disease.
“Following a Mediterranean diet rich in virgin olive oil could protect our cardiovascular health in several ways, including making our ‘good cholesterol’ work in a more complete way.”
